74th Golden Globes Predictions

This Sunday is the first televised awards ceremony, and we're all really excited. The Golden Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and there is no overlap with the Academy (who votes on the Oscars). However, winning a Golden Globe can shift a movie's chances through perception and buzz. As I've said before, the HFPA is very star-crazy so that often influences their winners. So here we go!
Best Actress - Musical/Comedy
Annette Bening (20th Century Women), Lily, Colins (Rules Don't Apply), Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of 17), Emma Stone (La La Land), and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)

Winner: Emma Stone. It's the kind of performance that the Globes would eat up. Luckily, Stone is also radiant and layered in the film.
Dark horse: Bening or Streep
Best Actress - Drama
Amy Adams (Arrival), Jessica Chastain (Miss Sloane), Isabelle Hupper (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), and Natalie Portman (Jackie)

Winner: Natalie Portman. With her chief rival for the Oscar in the other category (Emma Stone), this is Portman's to lose.
Dark horse: Don't ever rule out the tropical flower Amy Adams. She won the Golden Globe twice already but in the Comedy/Musical category.
Best Actor - Drama
Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Joel Edgerton (Loving), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic), and Denzel Washington (Fences)

Winner: Well, Affleck and Washington are duking it out for the Oscar. While my heart wants Wahsington to win here and at the Oscars, I'm gonna go with Affleck. But I could be wrong and would be happy to.
Dark horse: If neither Washington nor Affleck win here, it's gotta be Andrew Garfield. Not only is support for the film really taking shape, but the Globes would not pass up the chance to award both he and Emma Stone.
Best Actor - Musical/Comedy
Colin Farrell (The Lobster), Ryan Gosling (LLL), Hugh Grant (FFJ), Jonah Hill (War Dogs, no, really), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool)

Winner: Ryan Gosling. This is kind of a weird category, since only Gosling has a shot at a Best Actor Oscar nom, and even that isn't a sure thing. Hugh Grant is campaigning for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars.
Dark horse: Ryan Reynolds, which would make him the first actor to get a major award for a superhero movie. Don't quote me on that; I don't feel like doing the research.
Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Nicole Kidman (Lion), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), and Michelle Williams (MBTS)

Winner: This award is Viola Davis' to lose.
Dark horse: Probably Michelle Williams. Although Hidden Figures is slowly becoming a major player.
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (HOHW), Simon Helberg (FFJ), Dev Patel (Lion), and Aaron Taylor Johnson (Nocturnal Animals)

Winner: Mahershala Ali. The support for him will carry him to the Oscar stage.
Dark horse: Jeff Bridges.
Best Picture - Musical/Comedy
20th Centure Women, Deadpool, Florence Foster Jenkins, La La Land, Sing Street

Winner: Again, LLL is practically Golden Globes: The Movie so there's no competition here.
Dark Horse: Maybe FFJ or Deadpool (that'd be kind of fun!)
Best Picture - Drama
Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water,  Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight

Winner: Moonlight. A lot of awards predictors are saying MBTS, which is possible. But my instrinct says Moonlight.
Dark horse: Hacksaw could also win this award too, because the Globes be cray.
Best Director
Damien Chazelle (LLL), Tom Ford (Nocturnal Animals), Mel Gibson (Hacksaw), Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), and Kenneth Lonergan (MBTS)

Winner: Chazelle and Jenkins are duking it out. But I predict Chazelle winning here.
Dark horse: Only the Globes would troll the internet and give Mel Gibson a major award.
Best Animated Film
Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, Sing, and Zootopia

Winner: Zootopia, though My Life as a Zucchini should win for that title alone.
Dark horse: Moana, or perhaps the star studded Sing, which is a big hit at the box office.
And now the rest of the awards..
Best Foreign Language Film: Toni Erdmann from Germany or Elle from France. .
Best Screenplay: MBTS or Moonlight
Best Original Score: LLL or Moonlight
Best Original Song: How Far I'll Go from Moana (gotta get Lin Manuel Miranda up on that stage!) or City of Stars from LLL

The Golden Globes air Sunday, January 8th at 8pm. The ceremony is hosted by Jimmy Fallon who, let's be real here, is basically Golden Globes: The Person.
